Who doesn’t like a Christmas sweet treat that is fun to make and that your family is sure to love?! It is one of the things I personally look forward to most of all. I love to bake, create and share, so getting to samples what others are creating is always a joy and the holidays are the perfect time to be able to do just that!
Christmas Crack: A Christmas Sweet Treat Your Family Will Love
Now, this isn’t something illegal, though it should be for how incredibly delicious and decadent it is! My family started making this recipe years ago, when our three girls were still quite young having get-togethers with friends and needing to take some kind of treat to share. This recipe is perfect for helpers, as you need to “crack” this up at the end and eat it in pieces; so much fun to do!
A Christmas Sweet Treat Your Family Will Love, Ingredients
You can probably find several variations of this recipe online, most using saltine crackers. We choose to use graham crackers for more cookie like flavor. Butter, brown sugar and vanilla make a really yummy caramel sauce on top of the crackers. Top the crackers with melted chocolate and various toppings to create a truly unique and treat!
Ingredients for the Christmas treat your family will love
1 box of graham crackers (I use 2 sleeves for one batch of this dessert)
2 sticks/1cup of butter (we prefer butter over margarine, but use whatever you like)
1 tsp vanilla, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 bag of chocolate chips (we use milk chocolate but use semi-sweet/white/dark or any combination)
Any kind of toppings you would like: chopped nuts/seeds/candies, etc., the possiblities are endless to customize!
First Steps
Preheat your oven to around 325, if your oven runs hot turn to 300, if it runs cool turn to 350.
(You will need a cookie/baking sheet with a lip to make this, as the butter/brown sugar mix will bubble and spill in the oven if not contained)
Line a large cookie sheet (approx. 10″x15″) with parchment paper. USE the parchment paper; I have made this recipe without the paper and it was a disaster, so USE the parchment paper!
The Recipe
Open the graham crackers and break in half, covering the pan in one layer of crackers. Once you get to the bottom of the pan, place single crackers to finish out the layer.
Melt the 2 sticks of butter in a saucepan and add the brown sugar. Stir with a whisk, being careful to not splash as this is HOT, making sure the brown sugar is completely dissolved. Once the brown sugar and butter are melted and combined, stir in the vanilla and remove from the heat.
Carefully pour this HOT mixtuyre over your layer of graham crackers, using a spatula to make sure all of the crackers are coated evenly.
Place the pan in the oven for about 5 minutes; you should see the brown sugar/butter mixture start to bubble.
CAREFULLY remove the pan from the oven, this is REALLY HOT
Here’s a video on making these treats: https://youtu.be/Henw9UCIC14
While the pan is sitting on a heat safe area, sprinkle the chocolate chips over the entire pan, making sure the chips are in one layer. The residual heat from the pan should be enough to melt the chocolate chips, but if it isn’t, you can place the pan back in the oven for 30 seconds to a minute, but do not take your eyes off of it, as it will burn quickly.
Once the chips start to melt, you can use an offset spatula to spread the chocolate over the crackers, making sure to coat them evenly.
When the chocolate is spread out, add whatever toppings you desire, get creative!
After all toppings are on, I place the pan in the freezer for about 10 minutes to harden.
The crack
When the chocolate is harden, you can take the pan out of the freezer and begin to “crack” up the candy treat! This is the fun part for little hands! Make into small or large pieces and enjoy! We store this in an airtight container on the counter, but if you are in a warmer climate, I suggest keeping it in a cool place or the fridge.
Now you have a Christmas sweet treat your family will love and enjoy!
