It’s hard to tell from the title of this post, but this has EVERYTHING to do with eating and nothing to do with showering! So, what the heck IS SOAP that will make your belly happy and full, anyway??!
One day, years ago I needed to feed my hungry family but when I checked to see what I had on hand, the pantry shelves were pitifully lackluster. From my account, I had potatoes, onions, sausage and some apples. Thus SOAP was borne.
SOAP (an acronym for sausage/onions/apples/potatoes) was this mama’s saving grace. It is a hardy dish, probably best enjoyed during the cooler months, as the ingredients lend themselves to being a stick-to-your-ribs kind of meal but satisfying none the less and a much requested meal from my family.

What you will need
It is so simple, yet the flavors meld together to form a cohesive medley of tastes. The meat I use is our own smoked sausage, but you could easily use any number of meats smoked or not.
The potatoes are not fancy either; Russet, Yukon Gold, Red really whatever you have on hand is going to be just fine. The type of apples always depends on what’s in season at the moment, so we have used Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Pink Lady, Honey Crisp and Gala. The onions, are either white or red (purple), doesn’t make much difference, just so that there are some in the dish is all that really matters.
How to bring this dish together
To assemble this amazing and easy one-pot-wonder, just follow these steps and BOOM! Dinner is served!
- Brown whatever meat you are using in a Dutch oven. (I use a 6.5qt Lodge Dutch oven). Since I usually use smoked sausage, I don’t add any oil or fat to the pot; use your judgement on what your meat may need to brown.
- While the meat is browning, peel and cube the potatoes. I do not have any real measurement of how many potatoes I use, but I’d say it’s close to 5lbs.
- Once the meat is browned, add the cubed potatoes to the pot and stir, the heat should be on med/high. If your Dutch oven has a lid, put the lid on at this point so that the potatoes can steam.
- While the potatoes are steaming, peel and chop 2 small or one medium onion. Add this to the pot as the potatoes are steaming. You want the potatoes to be softer but not mushy.
- Test your potatoes and cook them until they are the doneness that you and your family like.
- The last 5 minutes add 2 chopped apples (that have been cored and seeded) to the pot. Let everything steam for 5 more minutes and gently stir to bring it all together.
Sometimes, I find I need to add a little water to help the steaming along but I have also used homemade chicken broth if I had it on hand.
Now you have SOAP that will make your BELLY happy and full!
We serve this up in a bowl just the way it is right out of the pot, sometimes with a little homemade sauerkraut on the side.
This one pot meal has become a comforting addition to our family’s rotation of regular meals we like to enjoy!
We hope that you enjoy this recipe and give it a try!
