If you have followed us along our journey of homesteading, you KNOW you want to meet the cow girls of Smith’s Hidden Acres Farm, so here they are!

Meet Clarabelle, she was our first calf to ever live on our farm, she was 6 months old. Clarabelle is a purebred Dexter cow as are all of the cows on our homestead. The Dexter breed originates from Ireland and are smaller in size. They can serve multiple purposes as they are used for milk, beef and sometimes like oxen. Dexter cattle are a good family cow to have around.

The first one…

Cow in pasture

Clarabelle is in the forefront of this picture. If you look closely, you’ll notice Clarabelle only has one horn. That’s because her previous owners had a faulty dehorning done so her one horn grew back. Clarabelle is our sweetest and most social cow. She will come up to whoever happens to be walking through the pasture and patiently wait for a neck rub.

The mama cow girl of Smith’s Hidden Acres Farm

Next up is Libby. Libby is another Dexter cow and is almost the same age as Clarabelle at 9 years. Before coming to live on our farm, Libby lived a wild life, roaming a 50+ acres pasture with pigs and goats. Libby is a little shy when you first meet her but will warm up quickly with some time.

Libby came to us with her 16 month old calf Penny. Most Dexter cattle are black but have the potential to be a range of shades. From black to brown and copper red. Penny is a cautious girl, it takes her some time to warm up to anyone new but she is willing to try! Penny is a pretty girl and she knows it, often taking the time to pose for a photo op!

BIG Sis

Rounding out the “cow girls” at Smith’s Hidden Acres Farm is our baby Willa. Willa was born on our farm to Libby in April of 2021, on the birthday of my father, William, hence, her name became Willa.

Willa is a curious girl, always ready to have fun with anyone willing to play with her. Penny, Willa’s big sis, isn’t as enchanted with the calf as we all are but none the less, gives her baby sister some attention when mom is busy browsing the pasture. Willa can often be found trailing the other cows in the pasture or hanging out with the sheep that roam around.

We are hoping to add to our “herd” with the breeding. We love the Dexter breed and have come to enjoy their unique personalities and their mostly docile nature. They have been easy to handle and are perfect for the smaller farm as a true family cow.

Now that you have been able to meet the cow girls of Smith’s Hidden Acres Farm, stay tuned to meet the other animal residents of the homestead!
